ECB President Christine Lagarde expressed her respect for François Villeroy de Galhau’s decision to step down as Governor of the Banque de France after 11 years in office, praising his long-standing service to France and to Europe.

In a statement issued on Monday, Lagarde highlighted Villeroy de Galhau’s contribution to the ECB Governing Council, noting his realism, strong European commitment and clear strategic vision, which she said significantly enriched policy discussions.

She also welcomed his move to become President of the Fondation des Apprentis d’Auteuil, where he will focus on supporting vulnerable young people and families through education, social initiatives and vocational training.

Lagarde concluded by saying that Villeroy de Galhau would remain a friend of the ECB and wished him success in his new role.
