Global chemical production is growing rapidly, supporting the green and digital transitions but also creating risks for health and ecosystems. According to a European Environment Agency (EEA) briefing, published today, key policy measures foreseen in the European Commission’s chemicals strategy for sustainability offer significant potential to ensure consumer safety, cut pollution and clean up material flows.
Chemicals play a key roleÌýacrossÌýeconomic sectors in Europe and globally, including agriculture, energy,Ìýhealthcare,Ìýand manufacturing.ÌýAlmostÌýall consumerÌýgoodsÌýcontain chemicalsÌýto improve product functionality.ÌýAt the same time,ÌýevidenceÌýsuggests thatÌý³¦³ó±ð³¾¾±³¦²¹±ôÌý±è´Ç±ô±ô³Ü³Ù¾±´Ç²ÔÌýhas exceeded safe limitsÌýatÌýglobalÌýlevel.ÌýOurÌýpervasive use and release of chemicals means that today, the bodies of EuropeanÌýcitizensÌýare contaminated with a large number of chemicals — some at levelsÌýdamaging to health.ÌýEuropeansÌýareÌýalsoÌýconcerned aboutÌýtheÌýnegative impactsÌýof chemicalsÌýon health and the environment.
According to theÌýEEA briefingÌý‘’,ÌýtheÌýincreasingÌýproduction and consumption of chemicalsÌýcreatesÌýchallengesÌýat global scale,Ìýranging fromÌýnegativeÌýimpacts on people’sÌýhealthÌýandÌýpollutionÌýof our environmentÌýtoÌýreinforcingÌýourÌýdependency on fossil fuelsÌýandÌýcontributing toÌýgreenhouse gas emissions.ÌýEvidence suggests that we have now exceeded the planetary boundary for chemical pollution.ÌýChemicalsÌýin productsÌýalsoÌýpresent a barrier toÌýre-use or recycling,ÌýhamperingÌýresource efficiency andÌýtheÌýtransition toÌýcircular economy.
The EEAÌýbriefingÌýhighlights the importance of delivering onÌýkeyÌýactions,Ìýforeseen in theÌýEuropean Commission’sÌý, toÌýensureÌýsafe products for citizens,Ìýkeep ecosystems clean andÌýhealthy and support the transition to a circular economy.ÌýTheseÌýinclude:
- PromotingÌýchemicals that areÌýsafe and sustainable by design,ÌýharnessingÌýthe innovative capacity of the chemical industry to provide technologies, materials and products that are non-toxic, low-carbon and fit forÌýcircularity;ÌýÌý
- Phasing outÌýusesÌýofÌýharmful substancesÌýthat areÌýnot essential.ÌýHarmful chemicalsÌýshould beÌýused only whenÌýthey areÌýnecessary for health, safety or if critical for the functioning of society and if there are no acceptable alternatives; andÌý
- ManagingÌýthe risks ofÌýchemicals in groups, rather than one-by-one,Ìýto expediteÌýprotection of citizens and the environment.ÌýÌý
