British literary translator Len Rix was presented with the Hungarian Golden Cross of Merit in London on Monday for his work in translating Hungarian literary classics into English.
Rix was presented the award by Ferenc Kumin, Hungary鈥檚 ambassador to the United Kingdom. In his laudation, Kumin said Rix had decided to learn the Hungarian language after hearing one of his acquaintances speak Hungarian. Rix learned the language by himself using textbooks, audio recordings and literary works.
Rix鈥檚 translations include classic novels like Antal Szerb鈥檚 Journey by Moonlight and Magda Szab贸鈥檚 The Door, the latter of which was included in The New York Times鈥� top ten list of books in 2015.
