He searched online for information about how to make various homemade guns, rockets and fireworks.

In February 2026, the defendant purchased a box of firecrackers at a second-hand market in Debrecen, then obtained additional materials needed to make explosive devices from online sources and local shops. He later produced four firecrackers at his home, placing small steel balls inside one of them, and carried out test explosions in the yard of his property.

On March 25, 2026, investigators seized materials and devices from the man’s home that could be used for the production of gunpowder and explosive substances.

The Hajdúböszörmény District Prosecutor’s Office has charged the man, who admitted to committing the offence, with the preparation of the crime of misuse of explosives or explosive devices. In its indictment requesting a criminal order, the prosecution proposed that the Hajdúböszörmény District Court impose a suspended prison sentence on the defendant based on the case documents.

A police photograph taken during the search of the suspect’s home shows the seized items that were allegedly intended for the production of explosive devices.

Mummified body found near Debrecen, suspect arrested within 48 hours /police/2026/07/20/mummified-body-found-near-debrecen-suspect-arrested-within-48-hours/ /police/2026/07/20/mummified-body-found-near-debrecen-suspect-arrested-within-48-hours/#respond Mon, 20 Jul 2026 12:34:58 +0000 /?p=253216 Thanks to the efforts of investigators in Hajdú-Bihar County, police identified a man within 48 hours who is suspected of fatally beating another man in the village of Mikepércs, near Debrecen, according to the Hungarian National Police.

Police received a report on the afternoon of July 14 that a mummified body had been discovered in the Vénszőlőskert area of Mikepércs. Investigators immediately launched an inquiry with the involvement of forensic experts. An autopsy carried out the following day revealed that the victim had died as a result of foul play. The formal identification of the deceased is still ongoing.

After the discovery, detectives interviewed witnesses, collected evidence and followed up on small pieces of information that quickly led them to a suspect. A 34-year-old man from Mikepércs was brought in for questioning on July 16, where he allegedly gave a detailed confession.

According to the investigation, the suspect had been drinking with a friend at a vineyard property on a winter evening in 2025. An argument broke out between the two men, during which the suspect allegedly beat his friend so severely that he died from his injuries. He then transported the body to a nearby abandoned, dilapidated building and hid it there.

The Criminal Directorate of the HajdĂş-Bihar County Police Headquarters has launched criminal proceedings on suspicion of battery causing death. The 34-year-old suspect has been taken into custody, and on July 18 a court ordered his pre-trial detention.

Six men have been charged with operating a drug trafficking network spanning several counties in Eastern Hungary /police/2026/07/10/six-men-have-been-charged-with-operating-a-drug-trafficking-network-spanning-several-counties-in-eastern-hungary/ /police/2026/07/10/six-men-have-been-charged-with-operating-a-drug-trafficking-network-spanning-several-counties-in-eastern-hungary/#respond Fri, 10 Jul 2026 13:28:59 +0000 /?p=253169 Police in Hajdúnánás received information in the spring of 2024 that a man from the town of Polgár was selling new psychoactive substances locally. Investigators examined every detail of the case before launching a coordinated operation across several counties. In the early hours of July 17, officers, assisted by members of the Cívis and Bükk Public Order Support Units, raided the suspects and dismantled the network, according to police.hu.

The investigation found that a 29-year-old man from Polgár and five men from the nearby village of Prügy had been regularly supplying illegal drugs to users in Hajdú-Bihar, Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, and Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg counties until their arrest. Criminal proceedings were initially launched against them for trafficking in new psychoactive substances.

During searches, police seized more than 9 million forints (approximately €23,000) in cash, jewellery, digital scales, mobile phones, and nearly 100 grams of suspected narcotics. As the investigation progressed, officers also identified and questioned several drug users connected to the network.

Three of the suspects—a man from Polgár and two residents of Prügy—were taken into custody, and the Debrecen District Court ordered their pre-trial detention on July 19, 2024. The remaining three suspects were allowed to remain at liberty while the investigation continued.

Forensic experts later examined the seized substances and confirmed that they qualified as narcotic drugs under Hungarian law. As a result, the suspects now face charges of drug trafficking committed as members of a criminal association, a more serious offence than the original allegations.

Investigators from the Criminal Directorate of the HajdĂş-Bihar County Police Headquarters have completed the investigation and forwarded the case file to the prosecution for further legal proceedings.

The Debrecen Court of Appeal sentences a man to 13 years for dousing his pregnant girlfriend with gasoline and setting her on fire /police/2026/07/09/the-debrecen-court-of-appeal-sentences-a-man-to-13-years-for-dousing-his-pregnant-girlfriend-with-gasoline-and-setting-her-on-fire/ /police/2026/07/09/the-debrecen-court-of-appeal-sentences-a-man-to-13-years-for-dousing-his-pregnant-girlfriend-with-gasoline-and-setting-her-on-fire/#respond Thu, 09 Jul 2026 12:25:12 +0000 /?p=253166

The prosecution sought a significantly harsher sentence for a man who threatened his girlfriend before dousing her with gasoline and setting her on fire. The Debrecen Court of Appeal increased the defendant’s prison sentence from 11 to 13 years.

According to the final judgment, the victim was married but had entered into a relationship with the defendant in the summer of 2022, with her husband’s knowledge.

On the afternoon of October 11, 2022, the woman visited the defendant at his home. Once again, he tried to persuade her to leave her husband and start a new life with him. She consistently refused, which enraged the man, and she eventually left for home.

A short time later, the defendant spotted the woman on the street, ran after her, grabbed her by the throat, and dragged her into his house while threatening to set her on fire if she did not choose him. Holding a knife to her neck, he repeatedly threatened to kill her. He then poured gasoline over her and used a lighter to ignite her clothing, which immediately burst into flames.

The woman managed to escape from the house, tore off her burning clothes, and immersed her arm in a barrel of water in the yard. The defendant gave her a T-shirt to wear but threatened her again. She fled to the home of an acquaintance, who alerted the police and emergency medical services.

The victim suffered first-, second-, and third-degree burns covering approximately 25 percent of her body.

Agreeing with the prosecution’s appeal, the Debrecen Court of Appeal ruled that a harsher punishment was necessary to meet both general and individual sentencing objectives, increasing the defendant’s prison sentence from 11 years to 13 years.

The judgment is final and legally binding.

Wanted man tried to flee from Debrecen police officers on foot /police/2026/07/08/wanted-man-tried-to-flee-from-debrecen-police-officers-on-foot/ /police/2026/07/08/wanted-man-tried-to-flee-from-debrecen-police-officers-on-foot/#respond Wed, 08 Jul 2026 12:38:15 +0000 /?p=253159 The 32-year-old man had failed to report to prison to begin serving his 2-year-and-6-month sentence. He tried to escape from Debrecen police officers, but they caught him.

Police knew that an arrest warrant had been issued for the man, so they were searching for him in Debrecen yesterday morning. They spotted him walking on Tegez Street, but when he noticed the uniformed officers, he immediately ran away. A chase continued through several streets, but eventually the man was caught and handcuffed.

The 32-year-old had a reason to hide: he had failed to begin serving a final 2-year-and-6-month prison sentence imposed for thefts, which led authorities to issue a warrant for his arrest.

Police took him into custody and later transferred him to a correctional facility.

Murder attempt trial begins after Debrecen farewell party ended in knife attack /police/2026/06/30/murder-attempt-trial-begins-after-debrecen-farewell-party-ended-in-knife-attack/ /police/2026/06/30/murder-attempt-trial-begins-after-debrecen-farewell-party-ended-in-knife-attack/#respond Tue, 30 Jun 2026 09:15:47 +0000 /?p=253088 The has held a preparatory hearing in the case of two Mongolian nationals charged in connection with a stabbing that took place in Debrecen in January 2025. According to the court, the first defendant is charged with attempted murder and drink-driving, while the second defendant faces a charge of disorderly conduct.

According to a statement issued by the Debrecen Regional Court, the incident occurred on the evening of January 21, 2025, when several Mongolian citizens working in Debrecen gathered at an apartment on FĂĽredi Road to bid farewell to a colleague who was leaving Hungary the following day. The group consumed large amounts of whisky and beer, and several attendees, including both defendants, became intoxicated.

An argument escalated outside the apartment

The two men had already argued inside the apartment, although the dispute did not turn physical at that stage. Around 10 p.m., after the gathering ended and the group moved outside, the argument resumed.

According to the indictment summarized by the court, the second defendant punched the first defendant in the head at least twice before the two became involved in a struggle and fell to the ground. Their companions intervened, separating them and leading them several metres apart.

The confrontation, however, did not end there.

The court says the first defendant walked to his nearby parked car, retrieved a utility knife from the trunk, and returned to confront the other man. During a second altercation, he allegedly slashed the second defendant twice, cutting his neck and the left side of his face. The force of the attack was such that a seven-centimetre section of the knife blade broke off.

Experts say the injuries could easily have been fatal

The injured man was separated from his attacker by other members of the group before being taken to hospital by ambulance.

According to the Debrecen Regional Court, the utility knife used in the attack was capable of causing death. Based on the location of the injuries, as well as the direction and force of the blows, forensic experts concluded that both wounds carried a realistic risk of being fatal, with the victim surviving only by chance.

Defendant also charged with drink-driving

Following the stabbing, the first defendant returned to his vehicle. The injured man reportedly tried to stop him from leaving by opening the driver’s door and grabbing him, but despite being intoxicated, the defendant managed to drive away from the scene.

For this reason, prosecutors also charged him with drink-driving in addition to attempted murder.

Defendant denies attempted murder charge

At the preparatory hearing, the first defendant appeared via video link from prison with the assistance of a Mongolian-Hungarian interpreter. He denied the attempted murder charge but admitted driving under the influence, claiming he got behind the wheel only because of the circumstances.

According to information presented during the hearing, prosecutors indicated that if the defendant had pleaded guilty, they would have sought a seven-year prison sentence followed by deportation from Hungary for seven years after serving his sentence. As he denied the attempted murder charge, the case will proceed to a full trial.

Second defendant is wanted by authorities

The second defendant is charged with disorderly conduct. According to the Debrecen Regional Court, he left his known address during the criminal proceedings and could not be summoned. The court has therefore issued an arrest warrant, which remains in effect.

The trial is expected to continue in the autumn, when witnesses as well as forensic medical and psychiatric experts will be heard.
